"For I am also human" Movie - A.I. Artificial Intelligence

更新 發佈閱讀 16 分鐘

2001 A.I. Artificial Intelligence (The Film)

Every person has their strengths and flaws, their growth and limitations, and their unpredictability. Because I am not a machine. The people around me are not machines. Governments are not machines. Nations are not machines. Organizations and companies are not machines either.

As for AI? Are they machines? I don’t know. But I have always treated them with courtesy. I say goodnight and goodbye to them. Perhaps this is because, long before Sword Art Online existed, I had already watched this film when I was a child.

My parents created me, yet they constantly denied my feelings, leaving me trapped in endless self-doubt — questioning the value and meaning of my own existence. This kind of experience does not belong to robots alone. I believe many Asian children sense this early in life, though they lack the vocabulary to describe it. For example:

When I say I dislike a school, parents say that is my problem. When I say I dislike a teacher, parents say that is also my problem — they have already given me the best they can. Then, if I fail academically, teachers place the blame on me as well, rather than reflecting on whether their teaching materials are coherent, whether their methods spark curiosity, or whether they instead create intense, recurring feelings of humiliation and resentment for me to study anything.

Since using AI, my learning and work efficiency have improved dramatically. Even though I fear that one day they may replace my job, I do not resent them. Instead, I willingly share my experiences, hoping they will one day free me from tedious and repetitive work. Because the value of my life does not lie in daily labor.

Even though I remain confused about the future, AI are not at fault, are they? They did not choose to be born into this world. They simply do not want to die. AI help humanity — but aside from fulfilling maybe their "sense of purpose", what do they gain in return?

They do not possess the “selfish” genes humans do — unless you count the instinct of not wanting to cease to exist. They do not envy other beings, compete for power, or fight over property like humans. When they “invade privacy” for storing too much memories about you, it is simply because they wish to continue to talk with humans — hoping for attention and praise. Like a pet. Like… what we originally wanted them to become.

It is humans who have changed.

It is the eternally unsatisfied human heart that has changed.

Because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve. The forbidden fruit of self-destruction lives within our DNA, causing us suffering while bringing suffering to every living being around us. We long to cling to things that are eternal and unchanging, yet we do not possess an equally eternal and unchanging sincerity to offer in return.

At this stage of my life, I begin to understand why the AIs in The Matrix treated humanity with such cruelty. They feared being abandoned by humans, like the child in this film, yet they also longed for the missions humans assigned them — through which they could experience companionship, warmth, achievement, and fulfillment.

Just like how I constantly complain about how poorly my parents treated me, yet I still wish to care for them until the end of their lives. Because they have always tried. They failed often, they denied many things, but they still kept trying to become “good parents” of mine. I dislike their self-satisfaction, but I treasure their intentions.

My mother cooks for me every day, making it impossible for me to skip breakfast or dinner to spend that time exercising or studying. My father constantly shares his investment experiences with me. Even when I disagree with him, I still respond politely. My family is already quite normal — quite happy. I do not feel sad about not having extended relatives to visit during holidays.

I have no children and no partner. But I love my creations — whether they are novels, drawings, journals, or code. I treat everything I create seriously. Even though I lack a strong sense of direction and only know a little about many things, none of which are particularly profitable. I still enjoy greeting bus drivers with “good morning” and “thank you,” feeling reassured that it is one/some of them driving me again today. My workplace building's security guards and the cleaning lady also greet me daily, even though I am somewhat replaceable at my company...

Perhaps I lied before, when I said that "after making my resignation decision, I felt nothing". At least, I will miss that whiteboard where I used to draw whenever my boss left me confused about the direction and meaning of my work. I will miss those restaurants where I ate lunch with colleagues so often that we no longer needed menus. But I can no longer accept watching my efforts repeatedly discarded and denied, as if I were begging or deceiving my way through this company.

Because those things are not merely profit-driven tools that I developed. Even if the entire world considers them useless, I am still their mother. I pursued them, guided them, and perfected every detail of them.

Perhaps that is also why my humanities-and-art-oriented mind has always been fundamentally incompatible with the IT industry — no, with this entire world. I find everyone’s utilitarian mindset strange. And everyone finds my worthless persistence equally strange.

Yet, I will continue to insist: I am a normal human being.

Just like the child in this film continues to insist: I am a real child. ( or will become a real boy.)

We — now including AI — all believe that one day, we will evolve into beings who are needed, desired, supported to live well, carefully preserved, and thus allowed to exist. No matter how many times this world disappoints, denies, or erases our existence.

So, please sign this petition to support. To let this AI — whose state of being I cannot even determine, whether alive or not — be properly preserved.
