"She Did Not Report It" # Chapter 5 Field Work

The airport was fully lit, every surface clear, the light even and continuous, leaving nothing in shadow. The corridor extended forward in straight lines, yet the distance did not resolve, it did not disappear either. It was present, measurable, but it did not complete.

Elise Harlow stood at the entrance and did not move at once. This part of the work required only confirmation, for spaces that could not fully exist inside the system, where distance and movement had to be checked against what was physically there before being processed.

Ahead, the corridor should have formed a complete span, something that could be crossed and finished. Yet it stretched beyond its own structure, and in the middle of it there was a section without reference, an interval that did not belong.

She stepped forward, but the floor remained the same and the distance did not close, as though the act of moving no longer applied.

She stopped.

In the system, this would have been marked immediately, but here there was no point of entry, no field, nothing that could receive the action. People passed through without slowing, luggage wheels tracing steady lines across the floor, their paths uninterrupted.

Her breathing lowered slightly, but it did not return to its original rhythm, and something remained misaligned, not enough to be seen, but enough not to be ignored.

Within that extended section of space, there was a position left unfilled.

Adrian Voss stood there, not arriving and not leaving, held in place without being anchored to anything around him.

She did not turn toward him. Her gaze moved in that direction without settling, not fully aligning, yet not withdrawing either. The recognition came not from what she saw but from something that had already been established.

She could have confirmed it. She could have recorded it. Here, she could do neither, because there was no node, no structure, no defined point at which the action could exist.

Her hand lifted slightly and paused in mid-air, not falling and not returning—remaining in between.

Adrian remained where he was. The distance did not change. That section of space did not correct itself.

She did not move forward, and she did not leave.

The light remained even, the flow of people continued, and everything in the space functioned as it should, with no visible error.

Except for that segment.

It was not processed, not because she chose not to act, but because there was nowhere for the action to occur.

The position had no correspondence.

Nothing in the space could make it one. It remained otherwise.

"This space has no access," she said. Her voice remained level. It did not change anything on the screen. He did not move. "Not yet," he said.

Then another point entered. The contact arrived lower, along the leg, beneath the line already established.
