Recently, I came across two articles that seem to discuss different domains on the surface, but in fact point to the same civilizational problem.
One is about the workplace:
“Don’t be so afraid of being exposed as not capable enough. You may even need to be a little more ‘shameless’ and turn impostor syndrome into a competitive advantage.”
The other is about education:
Students can submit reports that look nearly perfect, yet once they are questioned orally, they cannot explain them. As a result, some universities in the United States are bringing back oral exams and oral defenses.
Looking at these two things together, I only see one sentence:
Output has been preserved, while the responsibility chain has been removed.
Today, many systems, workplace training programs, and AI workflows are not really optimizing for this:
How far do I actually understand? Where does it fail? And if something goes wrong, who bears it?
而是:
Instead, they are optimizing for this:
Can I first output in a way that looks like I have the answer, looks qualified enough, and looks trustworthy enough?
That is the most dangerous part.
Because what is truly collapsing is no longer just fraud.
What is truly collapsing is this:
- The generation of answers and the bearing of answers have been split apart
- The appearance of authority and the closure of responsibility have been split apart
- A model’s ability to speak and a subject’s willingness to sign for it have been split apart
In the end, this produces an absurd civilizational condition:
The answer exists, but the subject does not.
The output exists, but understanding does not.
The text exists, but the responsibility chain does not.
The issue I have been striking at has never been the lower-level question of “whether AI is useful or not.”
What I am striking at is this:
Output without a responsibility chain should not be called an answer.
If a piece of output cannot answer the following:
- Who generated it
- Why it made that judgment
- Where it may fail
- Who repairs it when it is wrong
- Who bears it when something goes wrong
Then at most, it is only a proxy object that looks like an answer.
A steering wheel is not something anyone gets to hold just because they want to.
If you want the steering wheel, you must also bear the accident.
If you do not dare to bear it, then you are not qualified to hold the wheel.
The same is true of answers.
If you want the answer, you must be able to sign your name to it.
If you do not dare to sign it, then your output does not deserve to be called an answer.
