In Bamborough Castle there once lived a King who had two children, a son named Childe Wynde, and a daughter who was called May Margret. Their mother, a fair woman, was dead, and the King mourned her long and faithfully. But, after his son Childe Wynde went to seek his fortune, the King, hunting in the forest, came across a lady of such great beauty that he fell in love with her at once and determined to marry her.

M̄-koh to̍h tī in kiáⁿ Chhió͘ Oén出外去走chhōe伊ka-tī ê字運了後,1遍王tī大樹林á內phah獵ê時,去tú tio̍h 1位美麗到極ê女士,伊1-ē to̍h去ho͘ saⁿh--tio̍h,決心beh ka chhōa轉來做牽手。

Éng-kòe, tī Bián-bu̍h-lò͘ siâⁿ-pó--ni̍h, bat ū 1 ê ông tòa tī hia, i ū 2 ê gín-á, 1 ê sī hāu-seⁿ, hō chò Chhió͘ Oén, koh ū 1 ê cha-bó͘-kiáⁿ hō chò Mé Má-koeh. In lāu-bú sī 1 ūi chin súi ê lú-sèng, m̄-koh í-keng kòe-sin, ông tn̂g-kú í-lâi mā lóng sêng-sim-sêng-ì teh ka ai-tō. M̄-koh to̍h tī in kiáⁿ Chhió͘ Oén chhut-gōa khì cháu-chhōe i ka-tī ê jī-ūn liáu-āu, 1 piàn ông tī tōa-chhiū-nâ-á lāi phah-la̍h ê sî, khì tú tio̍h 1 uī bí-lē kàu-ke̍k ê lú-sū, i 1-ē to̍h khì ho͘ saⁿh--tio̍h, koat-sim beh ka chhōa tńg-lâi chò khan-chhiú.

Now Princess May Margret was not over-pleased to think that her mother's place should be taken by a strange woman, nor was she pleased to think that she would have to give up keeping house for her father the King. For she had always taken a pride in her work. But she said nothing, though she stood long on the castle walls looking out across the sea wishing for her dear brother's return; for, see you, they had mothered each other.

Taⁿ,公主Mé Má-koeh nā去想tio̍h講in老母ê位置koh來ē去hō͘ 1 ê生分ê女性取代,伊to̍h無kài歡喜,koh想tio̍h伊mā tio̍h ài放棄替伊ê父王hōaⁿ家,ûn-ná mā是歡喜bē --起-來。 M̄-koh伊啥to無講,kan-na to̍h不時chiú tī城堡ê牆圍á頂khiā真久teh看海,ǹg望伊親愛ê阿兄轉--來;khah án-chóaⁿ講,in 2 ê éng過to̍h bē輸是對方ê老母án-ne teh sio照顧。

Taⁿ, kong-chú Mé Má-koeh nā khì siūⁿ tio̍h kóng in lāu-bú ê uī-tì koh-lâi ē khì hō͘ 1 ê chheⁿ-hūn ê lú-sèng chhú-tāi, i to̍h bô kài hoaⁿ-hí, koh siūⁿ tio̍h i mā tio̍h ài hòng-khì thè i ê hū-ông hōaⁿ-ke, ûn-ná mā sī hoaⁿ-hí bē --khí-lâi. M̄-koh i siáⁿ to bô kóng, kan-na to̍h put-sî chiú tī siâⁿ-pó ê chhiûⁿ-ûi-á téng khiā chin kú teh khòaⁿ hái, ǹg-bāng i chhin-ài ê a-hiaⁿ tńg--lâi; khah án-chóaⁿ kóng, in 2 ê éng-kòe to̍h bē-su sī tùi-hong ê lāu-bú án-ne teh sio chiàu-kò͘.

Still no news came of Childe Wynde; so on the day when the old King was to bring the new Queen home, May Margret counted over the keys of the castle chambers, knotted them on a string, and after casting them over her left shoulder for luck—more for her father's sake than for the new Queen's regard—she stood at the castle gate ready to hand over the keys to her stepmother.

To̍h án-ne一直lóng等無Chhió͘ Oén ê消息;só͘-pái to̍h tī老王beh kā新王后chhōa轉來厝hit kang, Mé Má-koeh kā城堡內底所有房間ê鎖匙siàu好勢,用1條索á ka kat--起-來,sòa--lòe,為tio̍h beh求好字運,伊kā hit kōaⁿ鎖匙ùi伊ê tò-pêng肩胛後tàn--過-去—che是為in老爸佔khah大面,m̄是為tio̍h beh尊存新王后—了後伊to̍h khiā tī城堡ê大門口,準備好beh kā chia ê鎖匙交hō͘伊ê後母。

Now as the bridal procession approached with all the lords of the north countrie, and some of the Scots lords in attendance, she looked so fair and so sweet, that the lords whispered to one another of her beauty. And when, after saying in a voice like a mavis—

Chit sî, Mé Má-koeh iōng i bē-su hoe-bî hiah-nī hó-thiaⁿ ê siaⁿ kóng —

 "Oh welcome, welcome, father,

Unto your halls and towers!

And welcome too, my stepmother,

For all that's here is yours!"

“O͘h, hoan-gêng, hoan-gêng, góa ê hū-chhin,

she turned upon the step and tripped into the yard, the Scots lords said aloud:

"Forsooth! May Margret's grace

Surpasses all that we have met, she has so fair a face!"

贏過所有goán bat看--過ê人,伊ê面容to̍h是hiah-nī súi!」

I tī gîm-á téng tńg-sin, kha-pō͘ khin-ió-ió ta̍h ji̍p-khì tiâⁿ--ni̍h, hia ê So͘-kek-lân kùi-cho̍k tōa-siaⁿ kóng:

“Ū-iáⁿ--ê! Mé Má-koeh ê iu-ngá,

Iâⁿ kòe só͘-ū goán bat khòaⁿ--kòe ê lâng, i ê bīn-iông to̍h sī hiah-nī súi!”

Now the new Queen overheard this, and she stamped her foot and her face flushed with anger as she turned her about and called:

"You might have excepted me,

But I will bring May Margret to a Laidly Worm's degree;

I'll bring her low as a Laidly Worm

That warps about a stone,

And not till the Childe of Wynde come back

Will the witching be undone."

M̄-koh sòa--lòe我to̍h beh kā Mé Má-koeh變kah像恐怖ê蛇龍hiah-nī bái,

Sin ông-hiō khì thiaⁿ tio̍h chia ê ōe liáu-āu, tiô-kha-tǹg-tê, bīn-á khì kah hoán-âng, seng-khu oa̍t kòe-lâi kóng:

Nā-sī Chhió͘ Oén bô tńg--lâi

Chit ê hoat-su̍t to̍h bē phò-kái.”

Well! hearing this May Margret laughed, not knowing that her new stepmother, for all her beauty, was a witch; and the laugh made the wicked woman still more angry. So that same night she left her royal bed, and, returning to the lonely cave where she had ever done her magic, she cast Princess May Margret under a spell with charms three times three, and passes nine times nine. And this was her spell:

Thiaⁿ tio̍h chit kóa ōe, Mé Má-koeh chŏaⁿ chhiò--chhut-lâi, i m̄-chai i ê sin āu-bú, sui-bóng lâng chin súi, m̄-koh soah sī 1 ê lú su̍t-sū; i ê chhiò-siaⁿ hō͘ chit ê ok-chit ê chŏ͘-lâng kèng-ka siū-khì. Só͘-pái to̍h tī hit mê, ông-hiō lī-khui i hông-sek ê khùn-pâng, tńg-khì i iap-thiap ê soaⁿ-tōng, iā to̍h sī i éng-kòe teh chok-hoat ê só͘-chāi, i liām-chiù liām 9 piàn, chhiú bú 81 piàn, tùi Mé Má-koeh kong-chú pàng-hû-á. I ê chiù-gí sī án-ne:

"I weird ye to a Laidly Worm,

And such sail ye ever be

Until Childe Wynde the King's dear son

Comes home across the sea.

Until the world comes to an end

Unspelled ye'll never be,

Unless Childe Wynde of his own free will

Sail give you kisses three!"

“Góa chiùchó͘ lí piàn-chò 1 bóe khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng,

So it came to pass that Princess May Margret went to her bed a beauteous maiden, full of grace, and rose next morning a Laidly Worm; for when her tire-women came to dress her they found coiled up in her bed an awesome dragon, which uncoiled itself and came towards them. And when they ran away terrified, the Laidly Worm crawled and crept, and crept and crawled down to the sea till it reached the rock of the Spindlestone which is called the Heugh. And there it curled itself round the stone, and lay basking in the sun.

Tāi-chì to̍h án-ne發生--a,Mé Má-koeh公主e暗去睏ê時koh是1位美麗koh優雅ê少女,隔轉kang精神ê時soah變做1尾恐怖ê蛇龍;伊ê cha-bó͘使用人beh來kā伊梳妝打扮ê時chūn,去看tio̍h講眠床頂是1尾恐怖ê龍khûn tī hia,chit尾龍seng-khu放ho͘鬆--開ǹg in sô--去。Tī ta̍k-ke驚kah beh死做in走ê時,恐怖ê蛇龍to̍h sô--leh soan--leh,soan--leh sô--leh ta̍uh-ta̍uh-á sô ùi海邊á去,siōng尾sô到1塊在地號做Hiú ê紡錘形ê石頭hia。伊to̍h kā ka-tī khûn tī hit粒石頭頂,moa tī hia曝日。

Tāi-chì to̍h án-ne hoat-seng--a, Mé Má-koeh kong-chú e-àm khì khùn ê sî koh sī 1 ūi bí-lē koh iu-ngá ê siàu-lú, keh-tńg-kang chêng-sîn ê sî soah piàn-chò 1 bóe khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng; i ê cha-bó͘ sú-iōng-lâng beh lâi kā i se-chng-tá-pān ê sî-chūn, khì khòaⁿ tio̍h kóng bîn-chhn̂g téng sī 1 bóe khióng-pò͘ ê lêng khûn tī hia, chit bóe lêng seng-khu pàng ho͘-sang--khui ǹg in sô--khì. Tī ta̍k-ke kiaⁿ kah beh sí chò in cháu ê sî, khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng to̍h sô--leh soan--leh, soan--leh sô--leh ta̍uh-ta̍uh-á sô ùi hái-piⁿ-á khì, siōng-bóe sô kàu 1 tè chāi-tē hō-chò Hiú ê pháng-thûi-hêng ê chio̍h-thâu hia. I to̍h kā ka-tī khûn tī hit lia̍p chio̍h-thâu téng, moa tī hia pha̍k-ji̍t.

Then for seven miles east and seven miles west and seven miles north and south the whole country-side knew the hunger of the Laidly Worm of Spindlestone Heugh, for it drove the awesome beast to leave its resting-place at night and devour everything it came across.

Sòa--lòe,東pêng 7英里,西pêng 7英里,北pêng koh有南pêng 7英里,所有ê庄á頭to̍h lóng知影Hiú ê紡錘形石頭hia hit隻恐怖ê蛇龍有jōa iau,因為便nā暝--時,chit隻恐怖ê野獸to̍h ē iau kah離開伊teh歇睏ê所在,kā所有伊路--ni̍h tú--tio̍h ê物件lóng sà了了。

Sòa--lòe, tang-pêng 7 eng-lí, sai-pêng 7 eng-lí, pak-pêng koh ū lâm-pêng 7 eng-lí, só͘-ū ê chng-á-thâu to̍h lóng chai-iáⁿ Hiú ê pháng-thûi-hêng chio̍h-thâu hia hit chiah khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng ū jōa iau, in-ūi piān-nā mê--sî, chit chiah khióng-pò͘ ê iá-siù to̍h ē iau kah lī-khui i teh hioh-khùn ê só͘-chāi, kā só͘-ū i lō͘--ni̍h tú--tio̍h ê mi̍h-kiāⁿ lóng sà liáu-liáu.

At last a wise warlock told the people that if they wished to be quit of these horrors, they must take every drop of the milk of seven white milch kine every morn and every eve to the trough of stone at the foot of the Heugh, for the Laidly Worm to drink. And this they did, and after that the Laidly Worm troubled the country-side no longer; but lay warped about the Heugh, looking out to sea with its terrible snout in the air.

路尾,有1 ê真有智慧ê術士kā ta̍k-ke講,nā準講in想beh脫離chit款恐怖ê代誌,in to̍h ài tī ta̍k kang ê早起kah暗頭á,kā 7隻白色奶牛ê ta̍k滴乳lóng lu̍t kah lī-lī-lī,khǹg去Hiú ē-kha ê石槽hia,hō͘ hit隻蛇龍lim。In to̍h照伊講--ê án-ne做,了後蛇龍to̍h無koh擾亂chit kóa庄á頭;恐怖ê蛇龍變做是un-khûn tī Hiú附近,kā伊恐怖ê嘴kah鼻giâ koân-koân,目睭siòng ùi海--出-去。

Lō͘-bóe, ū 1 ê chin ū tì-hūi ê su̍t-sū kā ta̍k-ke kóng, nā chún-kóng in siūⁿ beh thoat-lī chit khoán khióng-pò͘ ê tāi-chì, in to̍h ài tī ta̍k kang ê chái-khí kah àm-thâu-á, kā 7 chiah pe̍h-sek leng-gû ê ta̍k tih leng lóng lu̍t kah lī-lī-lī, khǹg khì Hiú ē-kha ê chio̍h-chô hia, hō͘ hit chiah chôa-lêng lim. In to̍h chiàu i kóng--ê án-ne chò, liáu-āu chôa-lêng to̍h bô koh jiáu-loān chit kóa chng-á-thâu; khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng piàn-chò sī un-khûn tī Hiú hū-kīn, kā i khióng-pò͘ ê chhùi kah phīⁿ giâ koân-koân, ba̍k-chiu siòng ùi hái--chhut-khì.

But the word of its doings had gone east and had gone west; it had even gone over the sea and had come to Childe Wynde's ears; and the news of it angered him; for he thought perchance it had something to do with his beloved sister May Margret's disappearance. So he called his men-at-arms together and said:

"We must sail to Bamborough and land by Spindlestone, so as to quell and kill this Laidly Worm."

Then they built a ship without delay, laying the keel with wood from the rowan tree. And they made masts of rowan wood also, and oars likewise; and, so furnished, set forth.

「咱船to̍h ài駛去Bián-bu̍h-lò͘,tī紡錘石hia上陸,thang kā hit隻恐怖ê蛇龍lia̍h起來處死。」

In mā用守護樹去做槳kah船桅;lóng準備好了後,in to̍h出發。

M̄-koh i só͘ chò ê tāi-chì í-keng thàng khì kàu tang-pêng kah sai-pêng; sīm-chì mā thàng khì kàu hái ê tùi-bīn pêng, thàng ùi Chhió͘ Oén ê hīⁿ-á--ni̍h; chit ê siau-sit hō͘ i chiok siū-khì, in-ūi i kám-kak che hoān-sè kah i sim-ài ê sió-mōe Mé Má-koeh ê sit-chong ū khăn-khé. Só͘-pái, i tiàu-chi̍p i chhiú-hā ê bú-sū, kóng:

 “Lán chûn to̍h ài sái khì Bián-bu̍h-lò͘, tī pháng-thûi-chio̍h hia chiūⁿ-lio̍k, thang kā hit chiah khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng lia̍h khí-lâi chhú-sí.”

 Sòa--lo̍h-khì, in bē-su sai-kong 3-tǹg kóaⁿ, sûi chō 1 chiah chûn, Iōng siú-hō͘-chhiū ê chhâ chò lêng-kut. In mā iōng siú-hō͘-chhiū khì chò chiúⁿ kah chûn-ûi; lóng chún-pī hó liáu-āu, in to̍h chhut-hoat.

Now the wicked Queen knew by her arts they were coming, so she sent out her imps to still the winds so that the fluttering sails of silk hung idle on the masts. But Childe Wynde was not to be bested; so he called out the oarsmen. Thus it came to pass that one morn the wicked Queen, looking from the Keep, saw the gallant ship in Bamborough Bay, and she sent out all her witch-wives and her impets to raise a storm and sink the ship; but they came back unable to hurt it, for, see you, it was built of rowan wood, over which witches have no power.

Taⁿ惡質ê王后藉伊ê法術知影in已經tī來chia ê路--ni̍h,伊to̍h派伊ê小妖去hō͘風tiām--落-來,án-ne本底食風iāⁿ-iāⁿ飛ê絲á帆to̍h變kah軟siô-siô phi tī船桅頂。M̄-koh Chhió͘ Oén bē án-ne to̍h hông phah--倒;伊to̍h kā kò槳--ê叫出來開始kò。Sòa--lòe ê代誌是án-ne,有1日早起,hit ê惡質ê王后ùi城堡ê主樓看--出-去,去看tio̍h Bián-bu̍h-lò͘灣--ni̍h hit隻氣派ê船,伊to̍h kā伊所有ê女術士kah小妖lóng派出去召喚風颱,beh hō͘ hit隻船沉--落-去;m̄-koh in根本to無法度傷tio̍h hit隻船,kan-na ē-tàng鼻á摸摸--leh koh轉--來,因為,你ka看,che船to̍h是用守護樹ê柴做--ê,in hia ê女術士ê步數nā tú-tio̍h守護樹to̍h lóng變無效--去。

Then, as a last device, the Witch Queen laid spells upon the Laidly Worm saying:

"Oh! Laidly Worm! Go make their topmast heel,

Go! Worm the sand, and creep beneath the keel."

Now the Laidly Worm had no choice but to obey. So:

"The Worm leapt up, the Worm leapt down

And plaited round each plank,

And aye as the ship came close to shore

She heeled as if she sank."

「O͘h! 去kā in ê船桅ián ho͘倒,

To̍h án-ne:

To̍h chhoa̍h kah bē輸beh沉落海底。」

Koh-lâi, bô pō͘--ā, piàⁿ chòe-āu 1 thiap pe̍h-hó͘-thng, chit ê su̍t-sū ông-hiō tùi khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng chok-hoat, kóng:

 Hit chiah chôa-lêng bô-thang kéng, kan-na ē-tàng thiaⁿ oē. To̍h án-ne:

 “Chôa-lêng tiô--khí-lâi, chôa-lêng cho̍k--lo̍h-khì,

To̍h chhoa̍h kah bē-su beh tîm lo̍h hái-té.”

Three times three did Childe Wynde attempt to land, and three times three the Laidly Worm kept the good ship from the shore. At last Childe Wynde gave the word to put the ship about, and the Witch Queen, who was watching from the Keep, thought he had given up: but he was not to be bested: for he only rounded the next point to Budley sands. And there, jumping into the shoal water, he got safely to land, and drawing his sword of proof, rushed up to fight the awesome Worm. But as he raised his sword to strike he heard a voice, soft as the western wind:

Chhió͘ Oén 9遍piàⁿ beh靠岸,恐怖ê蛇龍to̍h kā hit隻好船擋tī岸邊擋9遍。 M̄-koh to̍h tī伊kā劍giâ koân beh phut--落-去ê時,伊聽tio̍h 1 ê聲,he聲ná親像西風án-ne輕輕軟軟--á:

Chhió͘ Oén 9 piàn piàⁿ beh khò-hōaⁿ, khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng to̍h kā hit chiah hó chûn tòng tī hōaⁿ-piⁿ tòng 9 piàn. Lō͘-bóe, Chhió͘ Oén hā-lēng kiò chûn se̍h hoan-thâu, su̍t-sū ông-hiō tī siâⁿ-pó chú-lâu koan-chiàn, lia̍h-chún kóng i í-keng hòng-khì: m̄-koh i sī choa̍t-tùi bē hông phah--tó-ê: i kan-na sī beh se̍h kòe āu 1 ê hái-phīⁿ khì Bá-to̍h-lì soa-phiâⁿ. 1-ē kàu hia, i to̍h thiàu lo̍h-khì chhián-chúi, an-choân chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ, koh kā i ê pó-kiàm poe̍h--chhut-lâi, chhiong kòe-khì beh kah hit chiah khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng chhia-piàⁿ. M̄-koh to̍h tī i kā kiàm giâ koân beh phut--lo̍h-khì ê sî, i thiaⁿ tio̍h 1 ê siaⁿ, he siaⁿ ná-chhin-chhiūⁿ sai-hong án-ne khin-khin nńg-nńg--á:

"Oh quit thy sword, unbend thy bow,

And give me kisses three,

For though I seem a Laidly Worm

No harm I'll do to thee!"

And the voice seemed to him like the voice of his dear sister May Margret. So he stayed his hand. Then once again the Laidly Worm said:

"Oh quit thy sword, unbend thy bow,

My laidly form forget.

Forgive the wrong and kiss me thrice

For love of May Margret."

「O͘h,kā你ê劍hē--leh,kā你ê弓弦放--開,

Sòa--lòe kā我chim 3 ē,

“O͘h, kā lí ê kiàm hē--leh, kā lí ê keng-hiân pàng--khui,

Sòa--lòe kā góa chim 3 ē,

Sui-jiân góa khòaⁿ--khí-lâi sī khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng,

Góa choa̍t-tùi bē kā lí siong-hāi!”

 Chit ê siaⁿ thiaⁿ--khí-lâi to̍h chhin-chhiūⁿ sī i chhin-ài ê sió-mōe Mé Má-koeh ê siaⁿ. I chhiú chŏaⁿ thêng--lo̍h-lâi. Sòa--lo̍h-khì, khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng koh kóng:

 “O͘h, kā lí ê kiàm hē--leh, kā lí ê keng-hiân pàng--khui,

Kā góa ê bái pàng ho͘ bē-kì,

Goân-liōng chit ê chhò-ngō͘, kā góa chim 3 piàn

Tài-liām lí tùi Mé Má-koeh ê ài.”

Then Childe Wynde, remembering how he had loved his sister, put his arms round the Laidly Worm and kissed it once. And he kissed the loathly thing twice. And he kissed it yet a third time as he stood with the wet sand at his feet.

Then with a hiss and a roar the Laidly Worm sank to the sand, and in his arms was May Margret!

接sòa,Chhió͘ Oén想起伊對in小妹ê愛,to̍h雙手kā恐怖ê蛇龍lám--leh koh ka chim 1 ē。

Sòa--落-來,蛇龍先si̍h-si̍h叫,了後koh喉叫1聲,to̍h沉入去沙--ni̍h,ah伊lám tiâu--leh-ê竟然是Mé Má-koeh!

Chiap-sòa, Chhió͘ Oén siūⁿ khí i tùi in sió-mōe ê ài, to̍h siang-chhiú kā khióng-pò͘ ê chôa-lêng lám--leh koh ka chim 1 ē. Koh-lâi, i koh kā chit chiah kò͘-lâng-oàn ê mih-á chim tē 2 ē. Tī i kha khiā tiàm tâm soa téng-koân ê sî, i koh ka chim tē 3 ē.

Sòa--lòe, chôa-lêng seng si̍h-si̍h-kiò, liáu-āu koh âu-kiò 1 siaⁿ, to̍h tîm ji̍p-khì soa--ni̍h, ah i lám-tiâu--leh-ê kèng-jiân sī Mé Má-koeh!

He wrapped her in his mantle, for she trembled in the cold sea air, and carried her to Bamborough Castle, where the wicked Queen, knowing her hour was come, stood, all deserted by her imps and witch-wives, on the stairs, twisting her hands.

伊用風moa ka moa--leh,因為in小妹hō͘冷ki-ki ê海風吹kah gi̍h-gi̍h-chùn,koh kā in小妹chhōa轉去Bián-bu̍h-lò͘城堡。

 I iōng hong-moa ka moa--leh, in-ūi in sió-mōe hō͘ léng-ki-ki ê hái-hong chhoe kah gi̍h-gi̍h-chùn, koh kā in sió-mōe chhōa tńg-khì Bián-bu̍h-lò͘ siâⁿ-pó. Tī hia ok-to̍k ê ông-hiō chai-iáⁿ i ê sí-kî kàu--ah, i só͘-ū ê lú su̍t-sū kah sió-iau lóng-chóng cháu kah bô khoàiⁿ iáⁿ, i ko͘-toaⁿ khiā tī lâu-thui, kín-tiuⁿ kah siang-chhiú ká ân-ân.

Then Childe Wynde looking at her cried:

"Woe! Woe to thee, thou wicked Witch!

An ill fate shalt thine be!

The doom thou dreed on May Margret

The same doom shalt thou dree.

Henceforth thou'lt be a Laidly Toad

That in the clay doth wend,

And unspelled thou wilt never be

Till this world hath an end."

Chit-chūn, Chhió͘ Oén bīn-tùi i tōa-siaⁿ hoah kóng:

 “Chok-gia̍t! Chin chok-gia̍t! Lí chit ê ok-to̍k ê lú su̍t-sū!

Lí beh khai-sí kiâⁿ pháiⁿ-ūn--a!

Lí chiù-chó͘ Mé Má-koeh pháiⁿ-jī-ūn,

Taⁿ kāng-khoán ê eh-ūn tio̍h lí--ah.

 Chiông-kim í-āu lí ē piàn-chò bái-chi-chi ê chiuⁿ-chî,

Tī nōa-thô͘--ni̍h pê,

Chiù-chó͘ éng-oán bô-hoat-tō͘ hòa-kái

Ti̍t-thàu kàu thiⁿ-tē-bóe.”

And as he spoke the wicked Queen began to shrivel, and she shrivelled and shrivelled to a horrid wrinkled toad that hopped down the castle steps and disappeared in a crevice.

To̍h Tī Chhió͘ Oén teh講話ê時,惡毒ê王后開始倒kiu,直直kiu,一直kiu到變做1隻恐怖koh jiâu-phé-phé ê chiuⁿ-chî,沿城堡ê gîm-á跳--落-去,消失tī 1 ê khang-phāng--ni̍h。

To̍h tī Chhió͘ Oén teh kóng-oē ê sî, ok-to̍k ê ông-hiō khai-sí tò-kiu, ti̍t-ti̍t kiu, it-ti̍t kiu kàu piàn-chò 1 chiah khióng-pò͘ koh jiâu-phé-phé ê chiuⁿ-chî, iân siâⁿ-pó ê gîm-á thiàu--lo̍h-khì, siau-sit tī 1 ê khang-phāng--ni̍h.

But to this day a loathsome toad is sometimes seen haunting Bamborough Keep; and that Laidly Toad is the wicked Witch Queen!

But Childe Wynde and Princess May Margret loved each other as much as ever, and lived happily ever after.

到taⁿ,有時chūn koh ē-tàng看tio̍h 1隻顧人怨ê chiuⁿ-chî tī Bián-bu̍h-lò͘城堡附近teh sì-kè so̍h,hit隻恐怖ê chiuⁿ-chî to̍h是hit ê惡質ê術士王后!

Ah咱Chhió͘ Oén kah Mé Má-koeh公主kah in éng過kāng款互相疼惜,koh來in to̍h lóng過tio̍h幸福koh快樂。

Kàu taⁿ, ū-sî-chūn koh ē-tàng khòaⁿ tio̍h 1 chiah kò͘-lâng-oàn ê chiuⁿ-chî tī Bián-bu̍h-lò͘ siâⁿ-pó hū-kīn teh sì-kè so̍h, hit chiah khióng-pò͘ ê chiuⁿ-chî to̍h sī hit ê ok-chit ê su̍t-sū ông-hiō!

 Ah lán Chhió͘ Oén kah Mé Má-koeh kong-chú kah in éng-kòe kāng-khoán hō-siong thiàⁿ-sioh, koh-lâi in to̍h lóng kòe tio̍h hēng-hok koh khoài-lo̍k.
