I am not a Buddhist, nor did I have any contact with Buddhism while growing up. However, one day, I came across a book written by Ven. Master Hsing Yun, that resonated deeply with me. And later, while searching for more of his books, I found out about a writing competition about the book “360 Dias para o Viajante”, organized by BLIA Portugal. I decided to participate because I wanted that book. But unexpectedly, I ended up winning a visit to Fo Guang Shan (Taiwan).
This prize came at a peculiar moment. I was closing a chapter of my life, but I still had some unanswered questions. I needed to find some inner peace and organize my thoughts. Moreover, I also wanted to know more about Venerable Master Hsing Yun. So I went. And this travel became one of my most cherished memories.
The air in Fo Guang Shan seems to reverberate with something singular. The place itself is stunning! From the people, who were very warm and welcoming, to the Nature. I found the panoramic views of Sutra Repository breathtaking. I really loved spending time in the Sutra Calligraphy Hall, either transcribing or meditating. And the Buddha Museum was also unforgettable! With stories and fables scattered around the area. And the shrine of the Jade Buddha definitely has something special that calms one’s heart and makes it easier to find inner silence.
Even so, what I loved the most was hearing more about Ven. Master Hsing Yun. From the stories told by people. From the exhibitions about his life and legacy. In particular, the One-Stroke Calligraphy exhibition was a personal favorite — I found it truly inspirational!
During my stay in Fo Guang Shan, I was looking for a conclusion. However, what awaited me was the glimpse of a new beginning. I found some answers; others need more time. But the most precious thing I brought back with me was a rekindled spark. (And a deck of Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s dharma words to guide me along the path.)
