Germany is facing a major shortage of skilled workers
Many older employees are retiring, and the country’s low birth rate means there are not enough young people to fill hundreds of thousands of job vacancies. To address this, Germany needs to attract around 288,000 foreign workers each year. A recent BBC report highlighted that Germany is turning to India to help fill these roles. With 600 million people under the age of 25, India has a large pool of potential workers. Germany is especially seeking talent in engineering, healthcare, manufacturing, and IT. The country urgently needs thousands of nurses, caregivers, and technology professionals.
As Europe’s largest economy, Germany is well known for its manufacturing strength, particularly in the automotive industry, with companies like Volkswagen, Mercedes, Porsche, and BMW producing world-famous cars. It is also a leader in renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, and financial services. To make recruitment easier, the German government has expanded visa opportunities for Indian workers, increasing the annual quota from 20,000 to 90,000. Still, many business leaders say the demand for workers remains much higher. Indian employment expert Aditi Banerjee noted: “There’s a huge labour surplus in India,” and she is helping many young Indians secure jobs in Germany.
