Global Military Spending Reaches Record $2.9 Trillion
Global military spending reached a record $2.9 trillion in 2025, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The annual report “Trends in World Military Expenditure” showed that defence budgets worldwide rose by three per cent compared to 2024, marking the eleventh consecutive year of growth.
Europe’s defence spending surged by 14 per cent to $864 billion, while Asia‑Oceania increased by 8.1 per cent to $681 billion. The United States remained the largest spender, allocating $954 billion to its military.
Several factors explain Europe’s record spending. One is that all NATO members met their target of spending two per cent of GDP on defence. In 2025, NATO set a new goal of five per cent by 2035. Another factor is the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, now in its fifth year. Russia spent around $190 billion, equal to 7.5 per cent of its GDP, while Ukraine devoted an extraordinary 40 per cent of its GDP to the conflict.
SIPRI noted that the rise in spending reflects countries’ responses to wars, tensions, and geopolitical uncertainty. It warned that this trend is likely to continue into 2026 and beyond.
