Keywords for The Unfinished State: A Tai-bun Epistemology
A linguistic lifeworld and epistemological framework, transcending the conventional category of "Taiwanese Word/Literature." It serves as the primary site for the production of Taiwanese subjectivity and indigenous wisdom.
Ontological Fluency. An existential state of harmony where individual endeavors and social actions align with the underlying cosmic and communal rhythms. It is the pragmatic grace of navigating a complex, multi-layered reality.
Vernacular Deliberation. A sophisticated, bottom-up communicative process of collective negotiation. It is the "social glue" that allows the Taiwanese body politic to perpetually reconfigure itself without collapsing into total disorder.
The Unfinished (未竟)
Theoretical Definition: Teleological Openness. The refusal to accept a fixed, externalized definition of statehood. It represents the persistent "becoming" of the island—a state of being characterized by constant struggle, adaptation, and democratic reimagining.
The Epistemological Blur (認識論的迷霧)
To understand Taiwan beyond the surface of its democratic ideals, legal frameworks, and its perpetually reconfiguring body politic, one must immerse oneself directly in the world of Tai-bun. Without this grounding, any analysis tethered to Western paradigms will only perceive a blur—a chaotic, disordered, and erratic 'Taiwanese psyche' and agency. To rely solely on conventional Western frameworks is to miss the profound intentionality that governs our collective survival.
Tai-bun as a Lifeworld
I use the term 'Tai-bun' to encompass more than just 'Taiwanese Literature'; it represents a linguistic world-view—a unique conceptual framework through which the islanders navigate their reality. It is a repository of indigenous wisdom where the island’s multidimensionality—its external contours and its subaltern depths—finally becomes visible.
The Anchors: Lī-sūn and Tsham-siâng
Within this world, concepts like Lī-sūn (利純) and Tsham-siâng (參詳) serve as our epistemological anchors. Lī-sūn is more than mere prosperity; it is an ontological fluency, an existential harmony where one's life aligns with the world's rhythms. Tsham-siâng, often oversimplified as 'consultation,' is actually a sophisticated vernacular deliberation—the communicative glue that allows for the constant reconfiguration of the Taiwanese social contract. These are the rhythmic pulses of our collective agency, untranslatable yet essential for truly grasping the Taiwanese heart and action.
I use the term 'Tai-bun' to encompass more than just 'Taiwanese Word/Literature'; it represents a linguistic world-view—a unique conceptual framework through which the islanders navigate their reality.
Democracy, freedom, legal frameworks, and a perpetually reconfiguring body politic and constitution—these remain untheorizable without a direct immersion into the world of Tai-bun (Taiwanese Word/Literature). To rely solely on Western paradigms and conventional epistemologies is to perceive only a blur: a chaotic, disordered, and unpredictable 'Taiwanese psyche' and agency. It is only by entering the Tai-bun world that one can discern the island's three-dimensional spatiality—its external contours and subaltern depths—to truly comprehend, and even anticipate, the profound intentionality behind the actions of the people on this small island.
