語言學上有一個概念是指示性（indexicality），意思符號與所指對象之間存在聯繫，在語言學教科書上常常看到的例子便是煙與火，如果看見煙便會想到火，煙與火之間具有因果關係。
會開始翻這首歌，是因為木匠好友Harrison說「Smoke and Fire is my fav」，他說他在《Emails I Can Send》喜歡上卡本特後，找到這首歌，便深深喜歡上卡本特的歌。我覺得如果說莎賓娜從過往到現在有一脈相承的風格，大概就是語言的玩味和符號、指示性、譬喻之間互相關聯兜湊成的世界觀，在歌曲裡建構一個歌詞與歌詞間互相指涉，甚至是專輯裡歌曲與歌曲間互相指涉的音樂世界。所以《Smoke and Fire》煙與火大概是莎賓娜眾多曲目中，最明白的指示性語彙了。
無論什麼關係，如果一段關係正在冒煙，代表互動中哪裡一定冒出火苗。如果忽視火苗，只會令火苗越燒越旺，千萬不要忽略任何警示性的徵兆。這也讓我想到莎賓娜另一首曲目《Tornado Warnings》，就是在說忽略龍捲風警報來襲，我們都假裝沒看見，而一切就這樣摧毀殆盡。
