Every year on May 18th, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) holds International Museum Day (IMD), a global event that aims to highlight the transformative role of museums in society. In 2026, the theme of International Museum Day will focus on "Museums Uniting a Divided World," emphasizing the bridging role museums play in crossing cultural, social, and geopolitical divides. By promoting dialogue, inclusion, and peace, museums serve as trusted public spaces committed to fostering mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
In an era of social fragmentation, polarization, and unequal access to knowledge and culture, museums play a key role in rebuilding connections across borders and generations — not only as spaces for preservation, but as shapers of sustainable and inclusive communities.
This year's theme aligns with three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries.
- SDG 16: Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies.
- SDG 17: Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
2026 marks the 60th anniversary of Fo Guang Shan's founding and the centennial of its founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Throughout his life, Venerable Master Hsing Yun devoted himself to promoting Humanistic Buddhism, peace and equality, and actively worked across divides to collaborate with people of all backgrounds, aspiring to be a bridge that connects the world.
On this historic occasion, the Buddha Museum has designed a special commemorative event titled “Buddha Museum Unites a Divided World” that is centered on "Peace, Equality, and Partnership.” Participants are invited to journey through a series of interactive challenges, answering questions along the way to discover how Venerable Master Hsing Yun promoted mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Those wishing to take part can pick up a free postcard at the Front Hall and follow the instructions to collect four stamps throughout the museum. Upon completing all the event tasks, participants will also receive a beautiful gift. Everyone is welcome to join!
Mark your calendars — May 18th, 2026 — and be part of this inspiring celebration!
