Victory Over the Powers of Darkness in Jesus Christ

Victory Over the Powers of Darkness in Jesus Christ
Colossians 2:6–15
Introduction: The Fear Within Us
Dear brothers and sisters, dear friends and neighbors—peace be with you this Lord’s Day!
Today I want to ask you a question: What do you fear most in your heart?
For many of us in rural Cambodia, certain fears have been with us since childhood—fear of walking through the forest at night, fear of nightmares about the dead, fear when children fall sick without explanation, fear of offending some spirit and bringing disaster, fear of being cursed by others…
Where I live now, many neighbors burn incense almost every day, placing fruit and water on small shrines in front of their homes. From time to time, they invite a spiritual practitioner to chant in the yard and set off firecrackers to drive away evil. Many people live their whole lives in these fears, constantly seeking protection—hanging amulets at the door, wearing charms around their necks, consulting spirit mediums when sick, asking monks for guidance when facing difficulties, worshiping land spirits when crops fail…
But today, the Word of God brings us good news:
Jesus Christ has completely triumphed over all the powers of darkness! You no longer need to live in fear!
Let us turn to Colossians chapter 2.
1. We Were Once Bound by Darkness (vv. 13–14)
Paul describes our condition before we believed:
“You were dead in your trespasses… but God made you alive together with Christ, having forgiven us all our trespasses.” (v.13)
Notice this: we were once “dead.” Not physically, but spiritually—separated from God, living under the power of darkness, without freedom and without peace.
A picture from village life:
In our villages, many people are afraid to go to the hospital when sick—not because of the illness, but because they wonder:
“Did someone curse me?” “Is there a problem with my ancestors’ graves?” “Did I offend some spirit?”
If a child cries at night, an elder may say, “A spirit is disturbing the child—prepare offerings.”
If someone’s business fails, they consult a fortune-teller: “You’ve been cursed—perform a ritual.”
This is how we once lived—bound by fear, guilt, and darkness, not knowing where true peace is.
But Paul says: God forgave all our sins and made us alive with Christ!
You no longer need to solve these things on your own—Jesus has already done it for you.
2. How Christ Defeated the Powers of Darkness (vv. 14–15)
Paul gives two powerful images:
(1) Canceling the Record of Debt
“He canceled the record of debt… nailing it to the cross.” (v.14)
In ancient times, debts were written down as legal documents. That paper proved your guilt.
We all owed a debt of sin. Satan accuses us before God: “This person has sinned—they deserve judgment!”
But Paul says Jesus wiped out that record, removed it, and nailed it to the cross—completely destroyed it forever.
A village illustration:
Imagine you owe a huge debt you cannot repay. Then your son returns from the city, pays everything for you, takes the debt note, and burns it before your eyes, saying:
“No one can ever demand this debt from you again.”
That is what Jesus has done for us.
(2) Publicly Triumphing Over Them
“He disarmed the rulers and authorities… triumphing over them by the cross.” (v.15)
In ancient times, a victorious general would parade defeated enemies through the city in chains.
Paul says: this is what Jesus did to the powers of darkness on the cross.
The evil spirits, demons, and forces people fear—Jesus has already defeated them and exposed their defeat publicly!
Dear friends in Cambodia, listen carefully:
The spirits you fear—the tree spirits, land spirits, curses, rituals—
they are already defeated before the cross of Christ.
Why fear a defeated enemy?
3. How We Live in Victory in Christ (vv. 6–12)
Since Christ has won, we receive that victory in Him.
(1) Walk in Him (v.6)
“As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.”
Live every step of your life in Jesus.
- When sick, pray to Jesus first.
- When troubled, call on His name—not rituals.
- When afraid, read Scripture and worship.
In Christ, you are safe.
(2) Be Rooted and Built Up (v.7)
“Rooted and built up in Him…”
Like a tree with deep roots—it stands firm in storms.
If you only attend church occasionally but never pray or read the Word, your roots are shallow.
But if you seek God daily, your faith will stand strong.
(3) Die and Rise with Christ (vv.11–12)
Through baptism, you are united with Christ in His death and resurrection.
Your old self—the fearful, bound, oppressed self—has died.
Now you are a new person in Christ.
And the One in you is greater than all powers in the world.
4. All Fullness Is in Christ (vv. 8–10)
Paul warns against empty teachings:
- “You must worship ancestors or be punished.”
- “Spirits live in trees—you must offer to them.”
- “Wear this charm for protection.”
These are human traditions that take away your freedom.
Why don’t we need them?
Because:
“In Christ all the fullness of God dwells… and you have been filled in Him.” (vv.9–10)
You don’t need charms—Christ lives in you.
You don’t need rituals—Jesus has already defeated darkness.
Like switching from muddy well water to clean flowing water—
why go back?
Conclusion: A Victorious Christian Life
Ask yourself three questions:
1. Do you truly believe Jesus has already won?
2. Are you still relying on something besides Christ?
3. Will you begin today to grow deeply in Him?
When fear comes, declare:
“I belong to Jesus Christ. Darkness has no authority over me!”
Final Encouragement
I often walk through the fields and see shrines with offerings. There are large trees people fear to touch because they believe spirits dwell there.
But I remember:
“He is the head over every power and authority.” (v.10)
Even those powers are under Christ.
We do not need to fear—because we are in Him, and He has already won.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, we thank and praise You!
You have defeated all the powers of darkness on the cross.
Today we bring every fearful heart before You.
Open our eyes to see Your victory.
Forgive us where we rely on other things instead of You.
Help us to trust You alone.
Root Your Word deeply in us,
that we may walk in You daily and experience the fullness of life in Christ.
In the victorious name of Jesus Christ we pray,
Amen.
