Press Freedom and Democracy
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has published its annual World Press Freedom Index, showing that press freedom is at its lowest point in 25 years. Among 180 countries, three quarters face "problematic" or worse conditions. In more than half of the world, journalism is rated as "difficult" or "very serious." Only seven countries, all located in northern and western Europe, were classified as "good."
The report emphasizes increasing authoritarian pressure on journalists. RSF stated: “Political pressure on the press is intensifying, authoritarian tendencies are growing, and the media market is heavily weakened.” In the USA, journalists face a systematic policy of attacks. In Russia, laws against terrorism and extremism are being used to restrict press freedom. RSF also reported that 67 journalists were killed last year, many due to war or organized crime.
