Plot Summary
After becoming a well-known journalist in the United States, Andy suddenly loses her job overnight. By a twist of fate, she is hired once again to help save RUNWAY, a fashion magazine whose reputation and influence are collapsing after publishing an article that angered major advertisers.
Now forced to face the devil from her past once again, can Andy survive another crisis?
A Sequel Arriving 20 Years Later
Based on the 2003 novel The Devil Wears Prada by American author Lauren Weisberger, the film adaptation of the same name, The Devil Wears Prada, was released in June 2006.
At the time, the film was produced with a budget of over 40 million USD, eventually earning more than 300 million USD worldwide. Looking back now, such overwhelming success and fame were outcomes the production team never could have fully expected in the beginning.
One of the biggest issues during production came from the novel’s background itself. Lauren Weisberger had previously worked as an assistant to Anna Wintour, and the story was heavily inspired by her real-life experiences during that period. The publisher even used this connection as part of the book’s marketing strategy. Because of this, during the early stages of film production, nearly every luxury fashion brand refused to allow designers to appear in the movie, and many did not even want their products shown on screen.
In the end, Prada — yes, the very Prada from the title — became one of the first major brands to support the project. Only after that did other luxury brands gradually join in, making it possible for audiences to eventually see appearances from figures such as legendary designer Valentino Garavani and German supermodel Heidi Klum within the film itself.
Twenty years later, things are completely different.
Backed by the massive popularity and financial success of the first film, the sequel arrives with far greater resources. Not only are the four main cast members returning alongside the director and screenwriter, but even Anna Wintour — who was widely believed to have inspired the original Miranda character — reportedly gave positive feedback after watching the first movie.
As a result, the sequel’s production budget became significantly larger, while luxury brands enthusiastically provided their products for the film. During the CEO birthday party scene, multiple currently popular runway models make appearances throughout the sequence. One of the runway shows attended by Miranda and the others was even filmed during the real presentation of Dolce&Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection. Not to mention Emily’s current workplace, Dior — arguably the film’s biggest sponsor — constantly appearing throughout various scenes in the movie.
From the scale of funding and resources alone, the film quietly reflects a reality that exists across every industry and profession: fame, influence, and profit often determine how smoothly things can move forward.
20 Years of Relationships
After its release in Taiwan, The Devil Wears Prada 2 received mixed reactions. One of the most common criticisms was that the romantic storylines felt unnecessary or even redundant. However, I actually see it differently.
For Andy, although we don’t know exactly how she met her ex-boyfriend Nate in the first film, her dynamic with her new boyfriend Peter starts off quite naturally. In the early stages of their relationship, they share strong chemistry — similar interests, similar taste, and even similar humor — creating an unexpected sense of compatibility and ease.
In the first film, as Andy becomes increasingly consumed by her job, her relationship with Nate begins to suffer. Arguments grow more frequent, and Nate often mocks the fashion industry as shallow, while completely failing to support Andy’s full commitment to her career.
In contrast, the sequel flips the dynamic. Now it is Andy who begins to see her work as something almost sacred and important, subtly belittling Peter’s job as a construction contractor as if it were less meaningful. During their conversations on the sofa — more like calm debates than the heated arguments of their younger selves in the first film — I was immediately reminded of the tension between Andy and Nate two decades ago.
We often unconsciously elevate our own professions, treating them as more meaningful or important, while overlooking or even dismissing the value of others’ work. In reality, no profession is inherently superior. There is no hierarchy of worth when it comes to how people contribute.
Compared to Andy’s first boyfriend, Miranda’s new husband Stuart stands in stark contrast. When her life is on the verge of collapse, he is the one who quietly supports her. He offers neutral, non-intrusive advice, but more importantly, emotional stability. No matter what decision she makes, he stands firmly behind her.
Given their age and life experience, this kind of relationship feels especially rare and valuable.
These two storylines are not just about romance. They also reflect how people navigate relationships across careers, generations, and emotional expectations — especially within partnerships.
Characters After 20 Years
Set two decades after the first film, The Devil Wears Prada 2 carefully preserves its internal timeline (with the story positioned around 2025). One thing I particularly appreciate is how the writing team shows both change and continuity in its characters after twenty years.
Take Miranda, for example. Many viewers feel she has changed significantly in the sequel. As Andy points out in the film, how can she so easily compromise on the conditions set by Emily? After watching the film, one can only conclude: Miranda truly loves RUNWAY.
She is willing to change her working style, adjust her behavior, and even reshape her communication — all to keep RUNWAY alive in an era where print media is rapidly declining. Yet despite all these changes, her passion and devotion to fashion and RUNWAY remain unchanged.
Andy, who once graduated from Northwestern University and entered the first film as a young assistant, returns twenty years later as a seasoned journalist — or rather, someone attempting to “save” the declining fashion magazine RUNWAY. Even while performing assistant-level tasks and submitting an article she believes could restore public perception, she remains fundamentally the same Andy: confident, yet still seeking validation from others. What has changed is her wardrobe, and perhaps a deeper appreciation for fashion.
Emily, now appearing as a Dior executive, immediately brings us back to her former self from twenty years ago. Every gesture, every expression still carries that same commanding presence. Her knowledge of fashion, brand history, and sharp wit remain unmatched — arguably second only to Miranda and Nigel.
From being an ambitious first assistant to a high-ranking executive and wealthy partner, Emily has changed in status, but not in essence. The only notable difference is perhaps her newfound courage to admit, at the end, that she wants to be friends with Andy — a rare moment of honesty and vulnerability.
Nigel, the most loyal and indispensable figure in the film, remains unchanged in his devotion to Miranda and RUNWAY. His passion for fashion and his old-school approach to styling and production still define him even after twenty years. If there is any change at all, it is perhaps the quiet confidence he finally gains in recognizing his own value.
Changes Over 20 Years
Before watching the film, I expected a nostalgic return to the work that first sparked my love for the fashion industry. I did not expect to find myself sitting in a theater, quietly tearing up while watching The Devil Wears Prada 2.
When the next-generation executive Jay Ravitz takes control of RUNWAY and the larger conglomerate, he shows little interest in the legacy built through years of effort. Especially RUNWAY — now a loss-making publication — becomes an easy target for restructuring and downsizing.
Similarly, tech entrepreneur Benji coldly states that the future belongs to digital technology and artificial intelligence. Even if we try to preserve the artistry and craftsmanship embedded in fashion and human creativity, they will eventually fade away. So why continue to struggle against the inevitable?
From Miranda’s gaze to her silhouette walking through Milan’s iconic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the pain becomes unmistakable. Even surrounded by beauty and dressed in elegance, she cannot hide the devastation of watching everything she built slowly dismantled.
For me, the most heartbreaking moment comes when Andy learns that RUNWAY is about to undergo major cuts and rushes to inform Nigel. Nigel, still working, simply absorbs the news and quietly returns to his tasks. No anger. No breakdown. Just acceptance.
It is especially painful because Nigel, despite being Miranda’s longtime deputy, possesses unmatched experience, knowledge, and passion for fashion. Yet before ever truly stepping into a position that reflects his ability, he is dismissed by someone who has no emotional connection to the industry. He is not young anymore, and his quiet endurance makes the moment even heavier — a restrained sadness that says more than words ever could.
