Winning from the get go is the creed Asian Family’s instill in their kids from infancy. Families push their children toward specific careers like being a doctor or a lawyer. These two fields of work mean everything to Asian parents. In most cases, if you are neither of these things you’re basically a failure. In my naiveness, I had the audacity to demand the right to make my own choices and pursue happiness for myself. In hindsight, I now realize just what an impossible situation this might be for both parents and children of Asian descent. In a way, life has a finishing line for many Asian families, that our standard and finite mindset. However, from the Genesis Account we come to realize that life has no end in sight. It is a continuous process or growth and development. Both in the mind and the body. Something I really enjoy is how Simon Sinek is able to simply paraphrase the comparison between the finite and infinite mindset in his book. This is a direct clear slap in the face to those who view success as the only worthwhile pursuit in life.

Simon’s infinite mindset has helped me to think, not just outside the box, but far beyond it. The infinite mindset is a lifestyle, not just a word heard from a best selling writer. His mindset aptly exposes the inaccuracy of my own wrong mindset. In finite games, we all want to cross the finish line to win, because the finish line is the standard by which we measure a winner. However, in the infinite game, there is no practical end and as such there is no such thing as winning. You simply have to keep playing in order to perpetuate the game. In infinite games there are also multiple metrics which is why we will never be declared a winner here.

The engagement between Simon and Noah at the four season’s hotel made me recall something I thought had since faded-away. A couple of years ago, there was a bookstore I kept going to, to buy magazines. This was not because the store sold anything special, it was simply because there was a staff member who remembered me and she always tried to recommend something that she thought would suit my taste. For this reason, I kept returning to the store until she was no longer working there. If the store owner creates the right environment where staff members can provide sincere services, the customers will undoubtedly be drawn to the store as they will definitely feel welcome. Based on the fact that humans are a highly social species, this arrangement benefits all parties involved from the owner of the store right down to the customer. I reckon that this bookstore demonstrated the perfect example. In my opinion, this is the message Simon’s book delivers as well.

The greatest benefit of the infinite mindset is the trust or sense of security it brings. Both these feelings add to our well-being in expressing ourselves. Because trust is the collecting and storing of small moments over time. Once you feel like you have a buildup of trust, however, vulnerability is something that naturally tags along. In a way, these two grow together, and to betray one is too betray both. It also ties in well with the concept of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, creating an environment of security in which you can feel safe. That is the thing we all yearn for. To be treated with respect and dignity.

We all live and work in a one-dimensional business world where people are neither valued nor appreciated enough to justify sticking it out with any given company. People will eventually leave especially if you treat them like an old towel, twist and abuse, until they are too dried out to be of any use. This is a phenomenon we see taking place all over the business world today. Perhaps you are lucky enough to attain something lucrative, but it lacks meaning and the win becomes ostensible. Whatever the case your complacent behavior as a worker has already made you lose out in the long run. From the very moment I completely reading the book, I realized it was time to start my own business renaissance. The one thing being absolutely noticeable is that negativity may lead at halftime but kindness always wins the game in the end.
